Larry Williams
WELCOME!
and THANKS for checking out my page.
I am Larry Williams, composer, guitarist and former trumpet player."
I played trumpet professionally from my teens up until this year, JAN 1st, 2011. (more)
At present, I concentrate on songwriting, guitar and vocal, as well as EWI, and percussion.
As a composer and orchestrator, I've written for many size ensembles from solo instrument works to full orchestra, using standard and non-standard instrument combinations.
I design and build a product line of unique percussion instruments for my own company called, "Bag O' Bones"
I've published a book of piano works, "The American Piano Series Vol. One"
Artist StatementWhen I heard James Taylor for the first time, I could hear a whole band just in his guitar playing. I remember being so enchanted by this concept and to top it all off, he sang while he played! Well I just had to learn how to do this, so when a friend loaned me his Yamaha fg110, it was non stop Larry on guitar. I became obsessed with the instrument, but always played it behind closed doors. To my family and “adoring public”, I was a very promising trumpet player at the seasoned age of fifteen, (see bio) and because a career on trumpet took precedence, it would be another twenty years before anyone would find out about my guitar playing. My secret love affair with the guitar led to composition not long after acquiring the new ax and I began writing tunes, pieces, and orchestrations from the guitar. I believe my time on the instrument has made my ears bigger and it brings a certain depth and rhythm to the compositions. The guitar became my sole composing tool. Whether I was playing the trumpet on tour in the U.S., performing with a U.S. Army band in Germany, or on a cruise ship sailing around the world, my guitar was always with me. There have been many prolific periods in which I just had to stop my life to get it all down, and over the years have built quite a comprehensive written and recorded catalog of all kinds of music. These compositions form the basis for all eight of my records and will for many to come. Since I retired the trumpet to focus more on guitar and composition, the idea of going back to my James Taylor roots and having the freedom that only a guitar and voice can give, is almost like living a long time dream. |
